Ministry of Health Malaysia has regarded Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as a hallmark for a competent and excellent nursing workforce and formed a policy to enforce CPD as a pre-requisite for the renewal of Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) in 2008. Health Minister emphasized that the requirement is important to ensure nurses upgrade their nursing knowledge and skills. CPD emphasizes on lifelong learning activities, continuous professional education and experiences and these are required for nurses. Lifelong learning provides a way of enabling professionals to continue developing.

“Come next year, it will be compulsory for nurses to achieve the relevant points by attending continuous professional development (CPD) courses to obtain a nursing practice certificate. As nurses, they get on-the-job training and promote themselves in many other skills. So, this (CPD) is compulsory now,”
